Ever wondered what the best-selling car in the UK is? Well, the Society of Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has all the answers and below we’ve got the latest information of the top 10 cars that have registered the most units in the UK for 2020 to date.
The SMMT has just revealed the top 10 best selling cars for July 2020 and the Vauxhall Corsa has taken top spot. Vauxhall’s ever-popular hatchback managed 5,455 sales to secure first place in July and that’s enough to see it rise to third place for the year so far.
Coming in at second for July is the Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta’s total of 5,421 for the month is a huge leap on the 790 it managed in May and a decent increase over the 4,386 it managed in June, signalling a return to form for the wider new car market as car dealers once again open up dealerships.
The Ford Focus is never far from the top of the top of the best sellers list and it sat third for July with 4,981 units sold, helping it retain second spot for the year so far.
Total new car sales were actually up 11.3 per cent in July compared to July 2019, with petrol cars up 0.3 per cent and diesel cars down 25.9 per cent. Plug-in hybrid cars were up 320.3 per cent in July and electrified vehicles as a whole were up 259.4 per cent.

Top ten best-selling cars 2020
1. Ford Fiesta – 26,519 registrations
The Ford Fiesta dropped outside the top ten in April with just 55 units and had a poor May with just 760 sales, but Britain’s best-selling car is returning to form as dealers begin to reopen as it made 5,421 sales taking it to second place for July.
2. Ford Focus – 23,126 registrations
The Ford Focus jumped up a spot to second in June 2020 and stays there for July. A poor May didn’t impact it’s position on the overall chart too much, despite it only managing 502 sales. 4,981 registrations in July comfortably beats its class rival, the Volkswagen Golf.
3. Vauxhall Corsa – 23,101 registrations
The Vauxhall Corsa was the UK’s fourth best-selling car in 2019 and it’s doing one better so far in 2020. A first place in June and July has helped solidify is position for the year with 5,455 sold in July. A new electric e-Corsa will help bump up numbers as EVs continue to grow in popularity.
4. Volkswagen Golf – 21,825 registrations
2019’s second best-selling car is recovering from poor lockdown sales, although a sixth place finish for June 2020 and a fourth place in July suggests it’s not recovering as fast as others. The Volkswagen Golf drops behind the Ford Focus for the year so far but remains a respectable fourth.
5. Nissan Qashqai – 17,777 registrations
The Qashqai had a strong start to 2020 with 4,608 registrations in January but lockdown followed the general form for the industry – only 49 Qashqai’s were sold in April. The Qashqai returned to form in July with 2,971 units sold, consolidating its fifth position for the year so far.
6. Mercedes-Benz A-Class – 17,648 registrations
Prior to lockdown, the A-Class sold well thanks to its premium image and competitive finance deals from Mercedes. The A-Class came fifth last year with 53,724 registrations and sits in sixth place so far this year. Mercedes sold 3,922 A-Class’ in July – the fifth best-selling car for July, helping the hatch maintain its sixth spot overall.
7. MINI – 15,146 registrations
The MINI has had a strong 2020, but it too succumbed to the issues of lockdown – only 22 MINI Coopers were sold in April and it dropped out of the top ten for May. June saw the MINI perform much better with 3,400 units sold it came fifth for the month. July saw a drop with only 2,906 registrations. A new all-electric model should help expand the car’s popularity with emission-conscious buyers.
8. Volkswagen Polo – 13,046 registrations
The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo clinched ninth spot in 2019 with 37,453 registrations. It only managed 7 registrations for April and remained outside the top ten for May. The Polo just missed out on the top ten for June with 2,469 but the German supermini performed better in July with 2,932 registrations.
9. Volkswagen Tiguan – 12,822 registrations
The Volkswagen Tiguan emerges into the top ten for the year thanks to a strong showing in July with 2,880 cars sold for the month. The Tiguan is currently the second best-selling SUV for 2020 so far after the Qashqai.
10. Toyota Yaris – 12,676 registrations
The Toyota Yaris had a healthy third place for June with 4,200 Yaris’ sold in the month. July was less kind to the Japanese supermini as its dropped out of the top ten best sellers, but it remains in tenth spot for the year. The release of new model this year should help the Yaris surge further up the best-sellers list.
