Best-selling cars in the UK 2020
Ever wondered what the best-selling car in the UK is? Well the Society of Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed the top 10 for February 2020 and once again the Ford Fiesta reigns supreme.
The Fiesta topped the charts with 77,833 registrations in 2019 so it’s unsurprising to see it gain a lead this year with 9,210 for the year to date and 3,123 in February.
The Volkswagen Golf took top spot for February with 3,457 registrations, with the Ford Focus stealing third place with 2,764 registrations.
Total new car sales were down by 2.9 per cent in February, with petrol cars down 7.3 per cent and diesel cars down a whopping 27 per cent. Plug-in hybrid cars were up almost 50 per cent in February and electrified vehicles as a whole were up 243.1 per cent.

Top ten best-selling cars February 2020
1. Ford Fiesta – 9,210 registrations
The Ford Fiesta achieved over 6,000 registrations to top the charts in January but has to settle for second in February with 3,123 registrations. The popular hatchback still remains top for 2020 however.
2. Ford Focus – 8,051 registrations
Ford has nailed down the two of the top three spots in February with the Focus taking third place. With the Golf Mk8 is set to hit showrooms soon the Focus will have its work cut-out for the rest of 2020.
3. Volkswagen Golf – 7,484 registrations
2019’s second best-selling car had slow start to 2020 with only 4,027 registered in January but the Volkswagen Golf had a bumper month in February – it topped the tables with 3,457 registrations.
4. Vauxhall Corsa – 6,244 registrations
The Vauxhall Corsa was the UK’s fourth best-selling car in 2019 and it stays fourth for February 2020. There’s a new model out now, so expect this strong start to 2020 to continue.
5. Nissan Qashqai – 5,901 registrations
The Qashqai had a strong start to 2020 with 4,608 registrations in January but it had a disappointing February with only 1,293 registrations. Overall, the Qashqai sits fifth for 2020 with 5,901 total registrations.
6. Mercedes-Benz A-Class – 4,862 registrations
The A-Class has sold well thanks to its premium image and competitive finance deals from Mercedes. The A-Class came fifth last year with 53,724 registrations and sits in sixth place so far this year, with over 1,000 more registrations more than the Vauxhall Grandland X.
7. Vauxhall Grandland X – 3,801 registrations
The Vauxhall Grandland X got 2,261 registrations in January 2020 and continues its strong start to 2020 with 1,540 in February. It’s still below the Nissan Qashqai in total sales for 2020 however.
8. Volkswagen Polo – 3,787 registrations
The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo clinched ninth spot in 2019 with 37,453 registrations. For 2020 the Polo is doing one better with 3,787 for the year to date.
9. BMW 3 Series – 3,648 registrations
The BMW 3 Series dropped out of the top 10 for February but remains in the top 10 for the year with 3,648 registrations so far. It remains the best-selling saloon car in the UK.
10. Kia Sportage – 3,386 registrations
The Kia Sportage did not feature in the top 10 for February but remains in the top 10 for the year thanks to a strong January. With 3,386 registrations, it’s the third best-selling SUV in the UK this year.
