Kia Telluride named World Car of the Year 2020

In spite of being a US-only model, the Kia Telluride impressed the World Car of the Year jury, including Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler and columnist Mike Rutherford, enough to walk off with the overall title.

In a double success for Kia, the new Soul EV was named Best Urban Car, beating the MINI Electric and Volkswagen T-Cross.

It wasn’t all bad news for Mazda with the Mazda 3 being named World Car Design of the Year, ahead of the Peugeot 208 and Porsche Taycan. However, the new all-electric Taycan did get two awards, winning both the World Performance Car of the Year and World Luxury Car of the Year.

Accepting the award on behalf of Kia, British boss of Kia USA, Michael Cole, said, “We’re ecstatic with the win – we all need good news at times like these.

“The Telluride is an important car for us as this SUV category is still the second biggest sector in the US. This really establishes us as a top-tier brand.”

In Auto Express’ review of the Telluride, we said, “It bodes well for the next-generation Sorento and Sportage in terms of looks, quality and tech. It also reminds us how Kia is continually getting closer to premium brands on all those fronts, too, while remaining at – or close to – mainstream prices. We’re not surprised the Telluride has become such a hit for Kia in the US.”

The two World Car wins for Kia top off a remarkable day for the Korean brand with the Kia Sorento topping this year’s Auto Express Driver Power customer satisfaction survey and the Niro coming fourth.
